Have you ever missed the chance to bid farewell to a deceased loved one? Have you ever felt highly lost in life to the point that you simply wonder what’s the reason behind everything? You begin seeking answers from the wind and screaming your woes in your subconscious.

These and more are the primary purposes of mediumship—the process of bridging the valuable connection between physical and spiritual realms. However, given its complex nature, it can still get confusing to elaborate on what is mediumship and the different types of mediumship.

What is Mediumship?

Most people understand what a medium is. Although not everyone is into spiritual traditions and beliefs, this term is among the popular concepts circling society.

Mediums are known to bridge the physical and spiritual realms, acting as conduits for individuals to connect with energies that can help elevate their lives. Although mediumship is an ancient (and perhaps easily outdated) tradition, it is still making the rounds due to its promised benefits.

Communication. Clarity. Consciousness

These are among the various elements commonly involved and achieved across the different types of mediumship. Likewise, these are the reasons why, despite the uncertain authenticity surrounding the concept, it still receives a fair amount of support.

Depending on which types of mediumship they practice, mediums offer to not only connect people with their loved ones but also provide a meaningful link between individuals and their spiritual guides, angels, and other divine beings. Mediumship is a practice deeply integrated with spirituality—a concept that can be highly debated, questioned, and dismissed. It’s a world that can be insightful but also quite implausible to the eyes of the skeptic, especially with the conceptualization it’s grounded on.

Understanding what it is, the components involved in its practice, and what these entail will not only help people make smart decisions. But this will also help them avoid issues concerning deceit from people taking advantage of people’s support.

The Diversity and Different Types of Mediumship

In Soul Licensed Tips and Tales, author David Tuttle provides an in-depth discussion of the vast world of spirituality. I have chosen to reference the book because it tackles not only mediumship but relevant concepts, thus showing how convoluted this sphere of practice can be. While sharing his experiences, the author touches on elements such as spiritual guides, psychic and medium abilities, and his intriguing belief in afterlife communications.

Overall, it’s a great material I’ve bumped into while diving deep into the likes of mediumship. It has also introduced the many beautiful types of mediumship and what each offers to receivers.

Like every other field of interest, mediums have the freedom to focus on a particular craft. Spiritualists have established two main types of mediumship: physical and mental. However, in recent developments, the practice has expanded to four standard forms.

What Is Physical Mediumship?

Regardless of the types of mediumship, the concept still revolves around spiritual communication. What does physical mediumship entail?

As its name suggests, physical mediumship refers to contacting spirits on the physical plane, commonly through object manipulation. This is among the types of mediumship where the medium calls on these figures to manifest, either through séances or board communications.

There are many ways physical mediumship can present itself, but it’s commonly deduced to paranormal phenomena that people fear or try to debunk.

Other examples include:

  • The presence of ectoplasms or an energetic material used by spirits to interact
  • Melted wax molding into different shapes and forms during such communication
  • Transfiguration, or when the medium’s face transforms into the present spirit
  • Object manipulation is where surrounding objects are tipped, thrown, or levitated
  • Materialization is where the spirit physically manifests to interact with others.

What Is Mental Mediumship?

In contrast to physical mediumship, mental mediumship takes place in the mind. Spirits interact solely with the medium, who then has the responsibility to convey the message to others.

Through this communication, the medium experiences sensations, making them aware of the spirits present. Given their skills in detecting outside-the-normal frequencies, they can become direct transmitters of messages to relay to others.

This form of mediumship encompasses:

  • Clairaudience of when the medium directly hears messages from the spirits
  • Clairvoyance is one of the most popular types of mediumship, where they see spirits
  • Clairsentience when the medium claims to feel others’ emotions
  • And claircognizance, where the medium knows facts about others

Most mediums now practice this, making it one of the most common types of mediumship. This is also the easiest and perhaps safest means of communicating with what humanity can’t see.

Healing and Channeling Mediumship

These are the newest and least common types of mediumship. Others may refer to them as mental mediumships, but they typically require energy or a higher state of being to practice.

As the names convey, healing mediumship is when a medium uses divine energies to heal someone. This is commonly done through physical contact to transmit energy from one body to another. On other occasions, such a contact isn’t necessary, especially when aiming to heal someone remotely. On the other hand, channeling mediumship happens when the medium opens himself to a higher state through meditation. Similar to what occurs in mental mediumship, this higher consciousness allows them to receive and relay messages from spirits and any being.

Some of these types of mediumship can overlap, making the art an intricate concept to fully understand. To get a better grasp of the types of mediumship, people can definitely rely on reference materials such as David Tuttle’s book.
