How many angels are there?
The number of angels is presented to humans as uncountable. Indeed, they are innumerable but are possibly trillions. According to the vision of the apostle Paul, there is an exceedingly great number of angels (Revelation 5:11).
Angels are spirits, are servants of God, and have a mission.
Angels, according to many religious beliefs, are spiritual beings who act as intermediaries between the divine and the human realm. They are often depicted as messengers of God, serving and carrying out His will.
Additionally, in various religious texts and traditions, angels are described as celestial beings who are tasked with specific missions to guide, protect, and support people in their spiritual journeys. It is believed to be their inherent nature and duty to serve God and assist His followers.
Angel Hierarchies in Heaven
The celestial hierarchy, as typically described in the study of angels, provides a framework for understanding the order and functions of angels within the celestial realms. Furthermore, Dionysius the Areopagite developed a complex and detailed hierarchy of angels, which has left a lasting impact on Roman Catholic and Orthodox theological thought. In his framework, he organized angels into three distinct groups, each consisting of three angelic orders.
First Hierarchy
• Seraphim – are believed to be the closest beings to God in the celestial hierarchy.
• Cherubim – thought to protect the passage to the Tree of Life and the Throne of God.
• Thrones – frequently portrayed as the elder figures carrying the throne of God.
Second Hierarchy
• Powers – often depicted as courageous and heroic fighters who bravely engage in epic battles against evil.
• Dominions – responsible for carrying out and upholding God’s justice in situations where injustices prevail.
• Virtues – believed in performing extraordinary miracles and displaying heavenly signs.
Third Hierarchy
• Principalities – carry out God’s plan during the ongoing spiritual battle for souls.
• Archangels – serve as God’s servants and play a vital role in supporting and aiding humanity.
• Angels – supervise and tend to the ongoing and varied needs, ensuring the welfare of all living beings on Earth.
Some Misconceptions About Angels
One surprising misconception about angels is that people assume that all angels are good. In fact, Satan was once an angel who rebelled against God. There are wicked angels who turned into demons and joined the forces of Satan.
Moreover, many people mistakenly believe that when individuals pass away, they become angels. The truth is angels have their own distinct nature and are separate beings created by God. They are not resurrected humans. Furthermore, perhaps, some people suppose that angels are created to serve us human beings, but the fact is they are made to obey God. Angels fixate only on God’s commands and not ours.
Angels are not to be worshipped
We are not encouraged to pray to angels for help. We should only pray to God through Jesus. Angels are servants of God, we are firmly to worship God and only Him.
